Tapes: Screencast Sharing App Reviews

I was thrilled to try this app which was recommended to my by my favorite podcast show. – Unfortunately the videos are not uploading and therefore the app is totally useless. I tried mailing the guys who made this software but never got a reply. Please fix the app as soon as possible!

I love this app! It you ever need to quick explain how to do something on the computer, or do show someone a problem you are having, this is the program to use. Simple record the screencast, and it’s uploaded and ready to share. I am surprised on how easy and useful this is!

Bought this app based on the positive comments on the Mac Power User podcast. Within 5 minutes of install I had created and sent out a screencast to my entire sales team. Clean, simple, and more effective than writing up a how-to document - which most sales people dont like to read anyway. Great app and thanks to MPU for the tip!

I was dreading showing the folks at the office how to do something in Excel, because I knew I was going to have to show them over and over about 50 times. It took almost exactly the same amount of time to record, post, and distribute as it would have to show one person one time! I didn’t realize that it would record your voice, but it does! Thanks MPU for Suggesting this!

It wasnt working on 10.8 but this update fixed that. I like this app, its simple. A few features Id love to see added: - branding removed from the web page since its a paid app, especially since they also have an imposed bandwidth limit per month - the ability to expire tapes from within the menubar

Tapes is simply the quickest, easiest way to communicate complex ideas in a hurry. I regularly use more complex screencasting software (Screenflow) to create course videos for my lectures. I’m a professor in my day job. While I have a lot of power and flexibility with other software, there is a lot to be said for the simplicity and ease of use Tapes brings. Start it up. Drag out the portion of the screen you wish to share and start recording. That’s it! When you’re done, click STOP and while the video uploads, the link to the url on Tapes server is dropped on your clipboard. All you’ve got to do is pop that link into an email, or iMessage and send it off for your viewers to watch. Clean, neat, simple. I love it!

I checked out this app because of the Mac Power Users podcast. If you’re like me, you’re constantly teaching people to do stuff on the computer. Being able to make a video and send them the URL in no time flat is pretty incredible. HUGE FAN! A+

Like others, I heard about this application on MPU. Easy to record and share tapes to others and like how the links are automatically added to the clipboard. While I don’t record tapes that are long in length, it would be helpful to save the video permanetly as well as a visual indicator outside of the preference panel for the length of time remaininig in the month for usage (calendar vs. 30 days). If you play the tech support role for anyone in your family you need to download this app.

I only saw this listed on the store so I didn’t see the instructions that are on the website on how to use. So I just changed my rating because this is very useful. It would be even more useful if it had an embed code as well as a link so I could include short little videos on my website without always taking them back to the tapes website.

I’ve used Tapes to build a couple of short screencasts providing some software training for student workers, and it works pretty well. This is one of those apps where the more I use it, the more I think of fun ways to use it — which is exactly as it should be. I’d rate it five stars if: * you could record tapes longer than three minutes (although the limitation has allowed me to title my training videos “X subject in three minutes,” which is great); there are times when even an extra 30 seconds would be beneficial, and I’ve had to re-record a couple of things where waiting for load times bumped me just over the three-minute threshhold. * you could do something with the final product other than link to it from the Tapes website; I have in the back of my head the possibility that the work I’ve done on the (admittedly few) Tapes videos I’ve made so far will go up in smoke if Pilot decides to cease development of the app. * there’s another comment about wanting embed codes, and that’d be super-handy too. Minor gripes though; this works great and it’s been well worth the purchase.

I heard about Tapes on the Mac Power Users podcast. As promised, it’s a super-fast app for creating and sharing screencasts. Thanks!

A friend sent me a screencast made with Tapes and I was impressed by how nice it looked. I quickly purchased it. It wasn’t until I was looking into the preferences and saw that you are only permitted 60 minutes per month, and each screencast is limited to 3 minutes. While this will suffice for most folks, I was hoping to use it to support users, and find this to be a bit limiting for a $10 product. There is a way to ‘earn’ more credit per month by referring folks, but that’s a bit of a hassle, and I’d rather have the opportunity to 1) Delete a screenscast to recover the minutes. 2) Option to purchase more. 3) Have them make the threshold higher than 60 minutes. Other than the time limitations - it’s a very nice little app.

It’s awesome, but the 60 minute per month limit is difficult to work with. I imagine many others, including myself, would be happy to pay for more storage per month.

I adobre this app and use it constantly. I use it to record quick videos for friends and family, demonstrating how to use a particular app or website. I also use it when sending bug reports to app developers, or when seeking tech support from developers. It’s one of my most valued tools.
